Day 1: 100 Degrees on Far Eastern Plains

(Kanorado, KS to Seibert, CO)

Goodness! I woke up *really early* to head out to Kanorado!
Special thanks to Marc Fey and Scott Kerr for driving me out there! :)
Yippee! At the Colorado/Kansas border! :)
A nice sappy shot of Scott and Marc (Visit Marc's web site!)
After riding a few miles east, I can across this grim sign! :)
Now you got to realize, it was so hot outside that I didn't bother taking that many pictures. Yet here's a few shots of hay bails!

This was in downtown Vona, population 100! :)
By the time I reached Stratton, my brains were fried from the heat! (And I thus resolved to do most of my biking WAY EARLY in the morning at 5 a.m.)

That dude at the rest stop was really friendly so I got a picture of him.

Bottom right picture: Let me tell you, ANYTHING that offered shade was my friend that day! ;)

I wound up finishing the day at a campground in Seibert, Colorado, just 45 miles from the Kansas border. I was not very pleased with my biking at all, but tomorrow would be a better day! :)

TOP RIGHT: The cabin I stayed in.
BOTTOM: Friendly Mom and son who I talked to in the pool.

Day 2: Freaking Out Over Frontage Roads

(Seibert, CO to Calhan, CO)

Now this day I was on my bike at exactly 5 a.m. and was so focused on riding fast and hard that I didn't bother taking pictures until about 8 a.m.

Here's a shot of Interstate 70, which I rode alongside on various frontage roads.
Don't be deceived by this picture, that frontage road goes on for miles as a dirt/gravel road!
Okay, here are all of my plains pictures:
  • Eastern Plains photos
  • Roadtrip Across The Plains
  • Western Kansas & Kanorado
  • El Paso County Fair in Calhan
  • Just west of Genoa, there was a 2 to 3 mile stretch of paved road!

    I WAS SO HAPPY!

I arrived in Limon at 11 a.m., and rested at a hotel pool until 4 p.m. There was no way I was going to bike in that scorching heat!
My Homer Simpson watch did a great job of keeping me on track! ;)
A really friendly 81-year-old dude in Matheson!
Arrival in Calhan! I went 85 miles! I would have stayed at a motel, but everything was booked because of the stinkin' county fair. So Toteco graciously picked me up and let me sleep at her house in Falcon.

Day 3: Arrival in Colorado Springs

(Calhan, CO to Colorado Springs, CO)

Special thanks to Tote for driving me back to Calhan the next morning to resume my trip. I could have cheated and began riding from Falcon, but that wasn't happening!
LEFT: Entering Colorado Springs on Platte Avenue. Pikes Peak hovers to the west!
    RIGHT: Academy Boulevard ... Yeeeeech!
    Arrvial in downtown Colorado Springs!

    Hooray! I'M HOME! :)
I was so happy to have made it back in town, especially compared to last year's trip! Click here to see the rest of the trip! :)
