CUSTER COUNTY, COLORADO! Scenic Pictures Of This Rural Colorado County (Compiled March 2006)
|
Custer County is a rural county in southern Colorado, located
west of Pueblo and southwest of Canon City. The small town of Westcliffe is the county seat.
Here are all of my photos from this very scenic and beautiful Colorado area
.
(Adjacent photos: TOP - I drove west on Hermit Road, taking
a photo of the view in town (looking west towards the Sangre de Cristo Mountains)
and a view looking east back towards town. BOTTOM - In the heart of Westcliffe.) |
|
Bishop Castle is one of the quirkiest
and most interesting personal projects in all of Colorado. Jim Bishop has been
consistently building a huge castle on his property, located right on State Highway 165.
I always visit every year to photograph his progress! :) |
|
The town of Wetmore is a really small
town located in the far northeastern corner of the county. From Wetmore, Florence and Canon City
are just a 15 mile drive north on Highway 67. |
 |
The Lake Isabel recreation area has a large lake that is popular for fishing. (Located about five miles south of Bishop Castle on Highway 165.) |
|
Probably the most notable thing about Custer County
is it's lack of people, wide open spaces and stunning views of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains to the west.
Here are two photos of the Sangre de Cristos in the Wet Mountain Valley, where Westcliffe and Silver Cliff are situated between the Wet Mountains and Sangre De Cristo Mountains. |
|
Now the Sangre De Cristo Range runs
like a long spine all the way down into New Mexico. On the other
side of this range is the San Luis Valley and the Great Sand Dunes National Park. This photo is of the Sangre De Cristo Mountain range from the west on the other side. ;) |
