LEADVILLE, COLORADO: Pictures Around Town (Alt. 10,000+ Feet)

(A January Afternoon Visit To Leadville, Colorado; Pictures of Snow and Mountains)

Mt. MassiveIt was a sunny and unusually warm day (January 14) in central Colorado and even though I enjoyed a local morning hike, I was itching to go out for the afternoon. Before I knew it, I was in my car and headed north to Leadville, the county seat of Lake County, and noteworthy for its mining history and elevation of 10,000+ feet.

Although there seems to be some disagreement between town officials in Leadville and neighboring Alma (on the other side of Mt. Sherman) over which town is the very highest, Leadville is frequently noted as one of the highest incorporated towns in all of America.

Notice all the snow in Leadville! See, I live 35 miles south in Buena Vista (at a lowly elevation of just 8,100 feet), and the weather is usually much colder and wintery in Leadville. Thus, no matter how tempted I might be to complain about the winter weather when it gets brutal, a reminder that "it's probably much worse in Leadville" often has kept me in check. ;)

I did not plan to take a lot of pictures and really didn't. Below are two mini-pictorials of the scenery from one spot in town. It's sort of a "lazy man's" way of photography, where I simply pick a spot that looks interesting and/or scenic, and then turn in a circle and take pictures of anything noteworthy. They may not be the greatest, but I trust you'll get a feel for what Leadville is like.

Lastly, 14er Mt. Massive (alt. 14,421 feet - photo above) was the "star" of the day with the digital camera. From Leadville, Mt. Massive is the behemouth-of-a-mountain that overlooks the town to the west. You can't miss it! Scroll all the way to the bottom to see my favorite shot! -Steve

By the way, I definitely plan to have a more serious photography session of Leadville sometime soon. And I'll be going back in the morning when the lighting will be better! :) Leadville, Colorado
The pink church building and steeple caught my eye with Mt. Massive in the foreground. In the bottom shot, I zoomed-out and included Mt. Elbert (alt 14,433 - the highest peak in Colorado) on the left. Leadville
