Colorado Springs Man Helps Carry Cooler

August 28, 2001

Dred Locks, YUCK! COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- A 19-year-old Colorado Springs man performed a well-needed task when he carried a cooler filled with ice and soda at the Horizons 39 picnic last weekend in Colorado Springs.

Joe Norton, who immediately stopped playing frisbee to carry the cooler, did not think he deserved any acclaim or special recognition for his willingness to help.

"That was a really great thing (Joe) did. That cooler was heavy," recalled Heather, who organized the three-legged race and egg toss at the picnic. "I needed someone strong to carry it over to the gazebo."

Steve Garufi, who was sitting at a wooden table talking with friends, did not offer to help because Joe gave his assistance without delay.

"Yeah, I was having a good conversation with Heather and Sue, and before I could even look up, Joe had already grabbed the cooler."

Asked if he felt special, Norton stated, "Not really. It was no big deal."

Garufi however, thought differently. "I've got this quote by James F. Clarke that reads, 'If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.' I think what Joe did was exactly what this quote is about."

"Jenni Picture" Looks Like She's on Drugs

August 28, 2001

Dred Locks, YUCK! COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- Jenni D., who attended the Horizons 39 picnic last weekend, looked like she was on drugs in a picture taken of her while sitting on a playground swing. (See picture to right)

"Oh my word! You look like you're on drugs!" blurted an onlooker insisting on anonymity, who viewed the picture from Steve's digital camera.

The 19-year-old woman from Minnesota insisted she has never used drugs, but admitted the picture, especially to those who do not know her personally, could be persuaded to think otherwise.

The controversial picture captured Jenni's attractive smile, but her eyes were completely closed as she presented a peculiar, unstable facial expression - looking as if she was under the influence of a controlled substance.

Dred Locks, YUCK!Garufi, who admitted taking the picture, defended Jenni and took offense to the insinuation. "I can't believe the media is making a big deal about this. All that happened was Jenni was laughing on the swing as she played with Michelle … and I just caught her at a bad moment ... but I took a lot of good pictures (of her) too."
